Travel Insurance for overseas marathons

Would be grateful for any advice on which travel insurance policies will cover you when you're running marathons overseas?

There are plenty that specifically include a long list of sports. But none of them seem to have marathons on their list. And most of them seem to exclude "racing" (which could embrace running) and "competitive sports" (which might well include marathons), making it easy for an insurance company to reject any claim for marathon-related injuries if they wish.

Anyone had any luck in finding an insurance policy which definitely does include marathons?

Many thanks

Danny

Re: Travel Insurance for overseas marathons

When you buy the policy declare that you will run a marathon - if the insurer accepts the proposal on that basis you are covered - and many will cover this since it is clearly a different risk from competing in professional sports.

If you explain to the insurance company what you intend doing in advance there should be no problem, worst case they may charge a slightly higher premium. If you don't declare then they will rely on the exclusions if a claim arises.

Some insurers also offer a sportsmans policy, where the coverage is perhaps a better fit for your needs.
