China Coast Marathon 2015

Ran this yesterday for the first time. Thought it was a really well organised event. Hills were bigger than expected though. On that note, does anyone know the total ascent for the marathon course. My Garmin recorded 1,235m of elevation gain but during training I'd been taking into account a Garmin record of a 2014 runner whose total marathon ascent recorded 589m of gain for this course. Compared to my training my higher recording seems more like it, but that could be just the legs talking!

Re: China Coast Marathon 2015

Congratulations Tim! I'd like to try this one but have been rather weary of the undulations of the difficult course! How long did it take you to complete, compared to HK Marathon?

Regarding elevation gain, could it be the 589m ascent is just the total difference between the highest and lowest points, whereas your data shows cumulative elevation gain?
If you export to Garmin Connect, you should see a whole raft of data... perhaps one of them correlates with that 589m from 2014 runner?

Regardless, congrats on completing the difficult course!

Re: China Coast Marathon 2015

I have a Garmin 310XT and find it wildly inaccurate for measuring elevation gain. This year it says 630m, last year 545, and the year before 1,510! I also once went for a run which it recorded as being supersonic fast and upon looking at the data discovered that it had recorded me starting my run 15km high in the sky...

Either way, it was a hilly run but I am used to the hills and enjoyed it. Congrats to the organisers for a very smooth race and fantastic refreshments and goodies.

Re: China Coast Marathon 2015

PS, my PB for this course is 6mins slower than my PB for half marathon and I have heard other runners say similar, but of course it depends on how good you are with hills.

Re: China Coast Marathon 2015

Thanks Jenny for the feedback on roughly 6min more for a PB on China Coast.

As for elevation gain, the only way it is accruately gauged is via a built-in barometer function on relatively new models like the Garmin 910 XT and Fenix models from last year. Even the Samsung S5 has one too i think. All other elevation signals are, at best, guestimates from nearby GPS terrain map data.

Re: China Coast Marathon 2015

for me i can actually run this course faster than the hong kong marathon . a lot depends on weather conditions as hkmarathon is usually later in the year it is more humid and warm which makes for a slower time . also the hills in CCM are shorter in length even though higher . it is more difficult to run long slow climbing hills than one steep hill . my CCM was 15 minutes faster than HKM in the same year .

Re: China Coast Marathon 2015

I'm talking about average PB time for a flat race in similar weather conditions. Some people even have overall PB for China Coast because their stars were aligned on the day. Probably the top runners would only be 3mins behind PB for a flat race under similar weather conditions, whereas novices might be 10 or 15mins slower. Until this year, I was 12mins behind PB for China Coast, but I did a lot of hill training to bring the gap down to 6mins.

Hi, Does anyone know if there have been photos of the race posted anywhere?
Thanks
