Wan Chai Sports Ground

Was wondering if anybody knows of any clubs that run at the Wan Chai Sports Ground track. I am keen to train there, but i understand it's not open to the public at any point.

Any info on how to gain access would be much appreciated.

Re: Wan Chai Sports Ground

Hi Matt, I understand both RRAC (http://www.rrac.org.hk/) and Thaiquain (http://www.thaiquain.com/) train at Wanchai Sports Ground but they are mainly local clubs. If you prefer to train with English speaking runners you can check out AVOHK (www.avohk.org) and I understand they have track sessions at Aberdeen Sports ground. Actualy, you only need to be a member of any of the affiliated clubs (http://www.hkaaa.com/page.php?pid=164&mid=141)and apply for a HKAAA membership and gain access with your membership card.

Re: Wan Chai Sports Ground

What are you looking to train for Matt? The best group track session around is on Tuesday nights at Aberdeen - 7pm. It's worth getting the bus through the tunnel for. Wanchai track often has too many sprinters and hurdlers taking up a lot of room. Distance runners get squeezed out there. Plus, you don't need any membership at Aberdeen.

Re: Wan Chai Sports Ground

Thanks for your response Keith. I am happy to train with anyone as long as they would tolerate a non cantonese speaker. Maybe it's not practical, but i'll check out those clubs, thanks.

Regarding access with a HKAAA membership card. Are you refering to the Wan Chai or Aberdeen track?

I've been to the Aberdeen track before and it's great. But the Wan Chai track is close to my home, and is convenient. I guess as distance runners we should not fear having to run some distance to the track!

Re: Wan Chai Sports Ground

Thanks for your reply alowther. I'm looking to train for distance running. The Aberdeen track is great, i've been a few times at weekends. But the Wan Chai track is very near my home, and seems convenient.
Thanks for the Tuesday nights tip, i'll have to check that out.

Re: Wan Chai Sports Ground

Hi Matt

The HKAAA membership card allows you to get access to Wanchai and Sham Shui Po (and also part of Tseung Kwan O, I guess) as HKAAA books those evening sessions for training by its members.

Re: Wan Chai Sports Ground

hi keith

just to update tseung kwan o stadium when booked by hkaaa is only for athletes with registered coaches not for hkaaa members.

i try few times already.

Re: Wan Chai Sports Ground

Hello Matt,
Not strictly a running club, as there's no official membership or registration at all, but a group of my friends do a weekly "Harbour Runners HK" run every wednesday 7:45 warmup, 8pm Start running.
They alternate between HK island and TST every week. Distance varies, but typically 8-10km, depending on the routes. They used to do mostly Central Pier #9 (star Ferry ground floor) running west towards Kennedy Town, but nowadays they're varying the routes abit more.
You can check them out on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/HarbourRunners.hk and they welcome both local and foreigners alike. There's quite a band of foreigners who like to run along (some really fast too!), because at heart, we're all just fellow runners wanting to go out and explore the city with like-minded folks.
I used to be a regular but over the past few months have been unable to join due to extensive working hours and missing the start.
If you do hook up with them, tell them Michael Cheung says Hi! :)

Alternatively if you're looking for a more serious and focused group to properly train, might need to hook up with http://www.italiarunningclubhk.org
They're an official club recognised officially by the HKAAA in 2013, and they have ALOT of fast runners, who regularly take podium places. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting them properly (they're WAY too fast to catch!) but on the one AVOHK 30th anniversary race, my team came last, and the Italia team were along the route running along with us to pace us to the end. Very nice of them and fully respect their incredible talent. But I have no idea where they all train.

Good luck with your training wherever it may take you!

Re: Wan Chai Sports Ground

Does anyone know when the Wanchai track opens in the morning? I just got hung up on because I do not speak Cantonese, and I would like to train in Wanchai tomorrow morning (armed with my HKAAA card).

Re: Wan Chai Sports Ground

I don't think it ever opens in the morning, and also I was told that it is now under maintainence right. You can also check with HKAAA.

Re: Wan Chai Sports Ground

Wanchai has no public jogging hours. It's rented by the HKAAA 6-9PM for HKAAA members. But it's now closed until mid-September for work on the Wanchai bypass.
