Getting Treatment For Sports Injuries In The Public Health Care System

My torn ACL has come back to haunt me and I will probably need a reconstruction.

However, I went to Queen Elizabeth Hospital today to book an appointment at their sports clinic and was given a consultation date of October 2015!

Could anyone advise me as to how I could speed up this process. (I don't have private health cover). I was hoping that I could get surgery within a few months, rather than a few years.

Let me make 3 suggestions. Getting a reconstruction will be expensive if you don't use the public system, but if you had a previous tear which healed, a sports physio may be able to help you preserve it until your 2015 appointment. They're cheaper than surgery.

If it's painful, go to the local clinic. Don't speak to the clinic doctor about sports; get referred to an ordinary orthopedic doctor in the public system. When you speak to that doctor about sports he will of course immediately tell you to stop running. ("If it hurts to hit yourself over the head with a hammer, stop hitting yourself over the head with a hammer.") He may, however, refer you to an ordinary surgeon outside the sports clinic whether you stop running or not. His waiting list is likely to be shorter.

If it hurts to hit yourself over the head with a hammer, stop hitting yourself over the head with a hammer. Racewalking involves very little knee flexion so you will probably be able to do it without pain or further injuring your ACL. If nothing else, it will keep you fit until 2015.
There is instruction at Hammer Hill on Monday evening and at Kwai Chung on Wednesday evening starting at 7 in both places.
