Athens Marathon 2010 Training - New to HK from NYC - Seeking Advice, Running Group, & New Friends!

Greetings HKRunners.com -

I am getting ready to start up training for my 1st marathon on Oct 31st, Athens Classic, after taking a finance certification exam on June 6th. I'm both excited and nervous about training for it & would welcome any advice from HK Runners users. I plan on following Hal Higdon's novice training program.

I'm pretty much new to running in HK, so I've only done my weekly runs on the treadmill. I would appreciate any feedback on running route recommendations & any running groups that I could join. I am job seeking at the moment, so my schedule is pretty open in terms of when the group meets to run. I'm currently staying in Tiu Keng Leng, but again, am flexible if I have to travel to HK Island or Kowloon for training.

Lastly, I hope to make some new friends as well through this experience! Thank you in advance and I look forward to your feedbacks.

Mh Goi!

Re: New to HK from NYC

Hey C,

I actually just moved back from NYC about 10 months ago after working there for 7 years (although I grew up in HK). Any way I just started running 10 weeks ago so I'm still a newbie. Generally I run anywhere from 5-8K (3-5 miles) @ a little over 6 min/K (10 min/mi). Currently I'm building my mileage but the goal is to run the HK Marathon (half marathon option) in Feb 2011. I will be running other shorter local races beforehand. How much do you run?

I actually asked a similar question about expat running groups just a few days ago since I'm wanted to mix things up. Here is the info I got:

- There is a bunch of expat runners that train at the Aberdeen Sports Ground on Tuesday nights at 7PM onwards. I was told to just go to the center of the track and ask for "Uncle Alan".

- I also joined the HK Trail Running Meetup (http://www.meetup.com/Hong-Kong-Trailrunning-Meetup/) mainly because I'm quite familiar with Meetup.com (I run a expat social group there). Although I've never ran on trails before...running is running :p

These guys actually have runs almost every day and Tuesdays they do a 5K cardio run next to the Happy Valley race track. On the weekends they generally hike/run about 13-25K I think.

Hope this helps!

Ken

P.S. Based on your username are you affiliated with "Stoked" the non-profit organization in NY/LA or are you just a surfer who is naturally stoked?

Hello,

I live in Hang Hau and run around the Tseung Kwan O area 4-5 times a week. It's actually a rather runner friendly area and there's even a sports ground for track training too. Currently I'm training alone and building up mileage and aim at running the HK half marathon next Feb. If you don't mind a running buddy sometimes you could contact me.

There are quite a few Hong Kong runners will be going to Athens and there are many running groups which you could join . There are at leats two groups on wednesday nights at Shatin sports ground with experienced marathon runners and both english speaking . If you came about 7pm you will find many runners there .

My wife and I are also training for the Athens marathon at the end of October. We're based in mid levels, so expect to do a lot of our training around Bowen Rd. Would be very interested in joining any training runs - some moral support training through the hot & humid summer! Cheers, Mike

Re: Athens Marathon

It's all uphill from 17 to 35K, so running on flat course is not good enough. Running uphill at Pak Tam Chung in Sai Kung or Mount Butler in Tai Tam will help.

Re: Athens Marathon

Thanks yes, in addition to the flat Bowen road I've been running around Tai Tam and some trail running between Wan Chai Gap and Aberdeen reservoir.

Does anyone know whether it's started to cool down in Athens by 31 October or whether it will still be hot? Though of course training over summer in HK we should all be well prepared for the heat!

Re: Athens Marathon

It was 10C when I started off but temp surged up quickly.
