Re: [Overseas] Standard Chartered KL Marathon (2010)
Back from Kuala Lumpur after trying the 2nd KL Marathon on 27/6. There’re a total 16,000 participants joining various categories started at different times: full marathon (5:00am), half marathon (6:15am), 10km (7:00am), 5km fun run (8:00am), and kids dash (8:30am). As compared with the runners’ comments about the inaugural event held last year, I would say that the race has been improved a lot.
The good points are:
The full course has been modified to a large closed loop and distance markers are placed at every km along the route…so an average runner should have little chance of getting lost (whereas there had been many overlapped sections & crossed junctions for last year).
There’re plenty of water stations & isotonic stations (every 2km & 4km respectively after the first 4km), plus a fruit station & a Power Gel station (at the 16km mark & 30km mark respectively) for replenishment.
Leading pace makers had been arranged for FM runners who intended to complete the race within the target time. Each pace makers carried a specific colored balloon to indicate the target finish time: 3 hrs, 3.5 hrs, 4 hrs, 4.5 hrs, 5 hrs, 6 hrs (the time limit).
The timing system is a single-use D-tag which adopts UHF RFID technology. The benefits are that it’s more cost-effective & less clumsy for the post-race logistics (no need to return tags after finish). Moreover, each runner has a tailor-made bib number cloth with runner’s name printed on the front (other information such as emergency contact & medical contact also pre-printed at the back)…It’s the most delicate bib number I’ve ever received.
The organizers set up a large resting area at Dataran Merdeka (the starting/finishing points) with tents to cover the sun. All FM, HM & 10km finishers receive their medals at the Finish Area. More, exclusive Marathon Finisher’s T-shirt would be distributed to FM finishers.
But there’re some not-so-good points:
No LRT or monorail service is available in the early morning…only some shuttle buses at a few pick-up points.
No spectator at all…apart from a few cheering teams stationed at KLCC (Twin Towers) plus other locations.
Road controls were exercised at many road sections & turnabouts. The slow runners (like me) had to tolerate multiple hours of disturbance (noise & polluted air) caused by the vehicles & motorbikes.
The collection of baggage deposit at the finishing area was a mess…Most runners had to wait for 30 minutes under the super hot sun (at 33C). I even witnessed a runner collapsed before he could collect his baggage!
The real upset is that a young 10K runner passed away during his run...
This's my 14th marathon trial (& my wife had her 6th HM try) and we're both satisfied with the arrangement by the organizers in general. An early rain started at 4:30am for an hour plus had made the morning air cooler than expected & the hot sun didn't come out until 8:30am...though the sun was really killing me when I crossed the finish line!
(SCMHK must catch up, I mean the "quality" of the race...)
